Looking like a shadowy figure in a witness protection program probably isn't the look you're going for. But it's surprisingly common when you're just getting started with video content. The good news? It's easy to fix.

If you're showing up on video to grow your business or brand, a few quick framing tweaks can totally transform your presence and help you make a stronger connection with your audience.

Why Framing Matters More Than You Think

This isn't about vanity. It's about clarity, trust, and comfort. When people can see and engage with you naturally on camera, they're more likely to stick around and actually listen.

Use the “Golden Third”

Instead of putting your face in the dead center of the frame, line your eyes up along the top third of the screen. This creates visual balance and allows space for natural hand gestures.

Keep the Camera at Eye Level

Looking down at the camera makes it feel impersonal. Looking up at it feels awkward. Set your camera at eye height to make the experience feel like a real conversation.

Light from Both Sides

Lighting makes or breaks your video. Light from directly in front of your face can look flat or harsh. Try using two light sources, one on each side, to bring depth and clarity to your expressions.

Find the Right Distance

If you're too far, you lose connection. Too close, and it's uncomfortable. Aim for a medium framing where your shoulders and upper chest are visible. It gives you space to move and keeps things feeling natural.

These small adjustments make a big difference. What’s the one thing you find most frustrating when filming yourself? Lighting? Framing? Let me know — I’d love to help.
